The Top Ten Reasons Students Fail
Students succeed or fail for very specific reasons. Over the past couple of semesters I have been able to track what these reasons are and develop a set of clear strategies that if followed will help every student succeed. You and I will be looking at these strategies throughout the entire semester.
But before I share them with you, I’d like to hear from you what you believe to be the top reasons students fail. If you cannot think of ten that’s okay, just share with us as many as you can.
So, what do you think are the top reasons students fail? In the next post, we’ll discuss what you think are the top reasons students succeed. Thanks and I look forward to your responses.

Lack of time, need to work, family issues, health problems, procrastinate, don’t take college seriously, move
Meaghan Lewandowski 1:06 am on October 11, 2010 Permalink |
I agree with everything you have mentioned. Along with health problems I would also include health related changes in life. This would include being pregnant for example, since I wouldn’t really consider that a health “problem”. I do agree that health problems would make students fail but I wanted to add the health changes. I know being pregnant myself makes it harder on me to do my school work and have the drive to get my school work done.
Logan Farmer 1:18 am on October 11, 2010 Permalink
Hi Meaghan,
Although I am not pregnant myself I can totally agree with you on the pregnancy point. A good friend of mine is about to have a baby and it is unbelievable how hard she has to work to get everythng done. Just the doctors appointments alone are very time consuming and piling school and work on top of being tired all the time already would be very exhausting. I really admire you for still pushing through and going to school!

Because if you are not focused on school, then you start to slide. Your grades drop and then you start to not want to even go to school and then next thing you know you’ve failed your courses.

There are many reasons why students fail, I do procrastinate that is why I am taking this course to help me become a better student. Some students don’t understand the course, maybe their parents forced them to go to college, their not interested, family matters, phyiscal or mental helth issues the list can go on and on.

I am running on 6 hours of sleep everyday. Sometimes i am to tired to do homework.
Yet i also think that other things play a big role as well for instance, not really carring about the class and only taking it to get the credit. having a child. not being able to manage time. or poor study qualities.

There are many possible reasons why students fail at college. I tend to think that a lack of organizational skills and carelessness are a major contribution. Students, who are just beginning college, do not realize the seriousness of their classes and do not properly organize their social, work, and class time. When students are put into a new environment, I feel, they are more interested in their surroundings such as, their new living conditions, the new roommate, dating, and drinking. Yes, students show up for classes but most of them are already thinking of what to do when they get out and are truly just not interested. Students who do not properly prioritize are setting themselves up for failure before their first year even begins.
Ernest Grant 12:55 am on February 1, 2010 Permalink |
I agree. The first year can be quite a shock for freshmen. It’s not high school of course, and when students are placed in such an environment that has the opportunity to offer so much freedom, they can easily become distracted.

Your first two comments are very similar to what I have already posted. A lot of students who attend college do have a lack of dedication and poor time management. For some students, money is always an issue. Not all students can receive financial aid, scholarships, or have their parents to rely on and have to get one or two jobs. It can be very stressful trying to manage your time between work, classes, and having a social life, it can be very easy to get lost in.

3. Interest or Understanding, being a lack thereof
Melissa 1:15 am on January 27, 2010 Permalink |
I believe the reason a student can fail is unique for each one. Meaning every student’s life is different.
If the failing student has to work a lot to keep up with paying for school-etc, they could be failing because of a lack of sleep and attention span. If a student has a child, they could be failing because they’re distracted and cant concentrate with their crying child. Or, the student could be failing because they are not mature enough to realize that school is important and not put forth the effort. Some parents are so forceful with sending their kids to college that they dont realize the student is not ready and is not putting their full attention on their studies. And sometimes a student could just be struggling in the class and needs a tutor.
Laura Gross 1:15 pm on January 27, 2010 Permalink |
Melissa:
I like the fact that you pointed out the maturity level of a student. It is often overlooked in many ways. Excellent point.
Gina Stapleton 4:02 am on January 30, 2010 Permalink |
I believe this is true as well. Failing doesn’t have a set standard, each person’s situation is very unique. Stress of working and paying for school are very key componentants to failing now and days but so is having a child. You can’t assume someone failed out of college for their lack of effort.
Karla Real 3:48 am on January 27, 2010 Permalink |
Hello everyone. I believe, speaking from experience, there’s many reasons students fail. When you lose interest, focus, and care for a course, chances are you will fail. I think confusion can lead to frustration, and wanting to quit. But sometimes, life itself will get in the way of many. I got into a car accident one time, and I did not have a way of transportation. Unfortunately, I ended up losing my job and failing my courses due to the transportation situation. I’m sure many of the students who have failed had to deal with difficult personal situations life has thrown at them.

I will use myself as an example here, I attempted college in 95, and really wanted to try. But never took it seriously. I became pregnant and just never returned until now. I have another class that we have to work in a “team” environment and I feel now I have matured and WANT to learn, they don’t contribute. I feel as if without me, our team would come unprepared. SO in this example it has many of these similar answers all in one. (Life, time management, the want to learn, lack of interest, personal issues, money issues) so many more. Does anyone else have a story to share?
MyLinh Nguyen 5:54 am on January 28, 2010 Permalink |
I think it is very important to be serious about school, otherwise you have no direction, no focus, and no goals. I also left school and had babies and it’s been nearly 8 years since returning to school for me and I feel that I now have a new focus and am taking it more seriously. I really think it comes with maturity and a new motivation.
Lakisha Tibbs 3:10 am on February 7, 2010 Permalink
I have to agree with what you stated. I was a college student right after high school but I didnt take things too serious and i wasnt all that motivated. I was focused on my marriage and makin money. Now several years and three kids later I know where i messed up. I am far more mature than in the past and I am motivated because i need to succeed. It is even harder now than in the past though because i am a full-time student and a full-time mom
Bill Patton 8:18 pm on February 4, 2010 Permalink |
Hay Tammy I to will use myself as an example,
I never went to college I had a good job after high school, but the job market has changed so here I am, two kids, X wife and ——- years later starting my college career. Some might say I waited too long, but if I would have gone directly into college I don’t know if I would have had the drive or maturity to complete it, and probably would be studying something different. Most of the young kids just out of HS don’t care and don’t want to learn. To sum it all up, I think two years real life experience is worth at least 50 college credits! But that’s just my opinion.

I believe the top reasons college students fail are… Lack of drive alot of college students get into drugs and partingand they miss too much work or do the work badley. Another reason would be relationship problems weither it is fighting with a boyfriend / girlfriend or too busy tring to pick one up that they lose focus on what at hand. The bad things about these reasons is that alot of people over look them as school related problems. They enjoy these reasons too much that the person will make excuses and find them selves falling in attenedance and grade point avarage.

there are so many reasons why, and we can all speculate..why not go from personal experiences…to what we have also seen in our lives…
I have seen alot, and done less than I really should have. In my other class, like I stated before we have to work as a “team” and I really enjoy that at work…
in class they dont put forth effort like I am, so the “lack of motivation” is definately there…they dont respond to emails to try and organize..they do not help with
projects. I work 50 hours a week and sometimes more, but its important to me. I did my “time for other things” and I had to learn this is what is important
for success.

I’ll be honest: I’ve failed a course before. I can give reasons based on experience, and common sense.
1. Procrastination. This is the number one grade killer. I’ve already managed to procrastinate doing this assignment, and if I were to let it get even more out of hand, it would effect my grade directly. The quality of your work suffers when you have to rush to finish it before the deadline.
2. Not investing in necessary resources. I’ve gone through an entire course without purchasing the textbook before; while I did not fail the class, I did not achieve the grade that I desired. This could have been averted had I purchased the textbook.
3. Work. Not all reasons for failing are brought upon ourselves by ourselves.
4. Not speaking up. Students who don’t speak up about concepts that they are not quite grasping will ultimately drag in that area. Understand concepts and ideas is what helps us take in our studies and readings.
5. Social life. Everyone wants an active social life. However, when leisure activities are getting in the way of school assignments, you have to draw the line. We are all guilty of this.
6. Personal capabilities. Not everyone is capable of becoming a doctor. That is a hard truth to face. But, coming from first hand experience, if you put me into any trigonometry or calculus class, I am going to fail. Sometimes a student will pick a course in which the material will go in one ear and out the other; no matter how much he or she studies.
7. Lack of motivation. Not all classes are at the top of our lists of priorities. For example: a student might be taking a class to fill in their full-time status, making them less motivated to get an A in said class.
8. Not taking advantage of your surroundings. Study groups are an excellent way to learn material. I unfortunately started taking advantage of this only recently. My grades before studying with classmates were average; my grades after studying with classmates were above average.
9. Anxiety. I can tell you firsthand that I have accepted failing grades on assignments that I did not feel confident enough to present in front of my class.
10. Organization. Keeping calendars and checklists is a very effective way of keeping up with your school work.
Out of these 10 reasons, I believe the top 3 that contribute most to students failing are: procrastination, social life and not speaking up.
Olivia 1:24 am on February 9, 2010 Permalink |

There are several reasons students fail. Some students fail because they are not motivated enough. Some reasons are far more complicated than that and some reasons are just crazy. Here are a few
lack of motivation poor study habits poor health/lifestyle too many jobs unorganized unclear priorities single parents unpleasant teachers that make students feel like they cant succeed and fear. Some people are scared to fail at things or try new things so they take the easy road and dont try at all so they can use it as an excuse (example a 60 on something in class and the excuse would be ” man I didn’t even try thats why I got that grade)

I think the biggest problem I have to deal with is balance and time management. I have four kids and work 40+ hours at work. This is my first semester in school and just getting my time management down seems to be the hardest thing to deal with. Also, life balance is important. I’m learning to balance my work , wife, kids and school. It’s important that none of these areas do not get negelected.

I agree with Rooderick. Many people sign up for school and don’t realize the sacrifices we make to better our future. Laziness is a big reason why people do not succeed. Also when you allow other problems to interfere like percrastination and distractions.

I agree with all the ones he is saying. I like how he said financial problems. That can really affect a grade in a college class because tuition and books are very expensive.

I believe thats one of the main reasons why people fail. No motivation

I did not consider someone who is afraid to ask questions or for help. It is a very good reason to why someone might fail at school.

Pretty much everybody said the same things in their posts. I did notice that Logan Farmer said afraid to ask questions. I really liked that one because a lot of kids don’t ask questions and it really hurts their performance in class.

Having to work and go to school.

I strongly agree with this!!! I feel that working full time and going to school is a difficult task and can get in the way of each other. It takes someone motivated and self disciplined to keep up with both at the same time.

I really do agree with you on this it really does take someone that is motivated and self disciplined to work full time and go to school. Also, for me, support helps me out a lot especially from people i care about.

I agree with all of those things. I have seen myself from time to time having one or more of those issues of why students fail. When I see myself having those issues; I just think to myself that I can work through this, as I see in my mind what I will be when I finish my goal.

Being afraid to ask questions was a great point; that can hinder a person’s progress .
Fadwa 6:32 pm on October 8, 2010 Permalink |
I completely agree with this. I didn’t really think about that one but that is a big problem, if you start out being afraid to ask questions then you will probably not understand any of the material.

I think that the questions also comes with maturity and age. For example, my first go around with college I was younger and not as interested in school and didnt care about my grades. Now at 25 and a family getting through school is a top priority. I do agree with this also.

I can relate to the age/maturity issuing being raised. Depending on how your prior schooling effected you as an individual, sometimes it can take some time learning the world outside of a schooled environment. My top priority is school now, so that I can have have a family because of the time, efforts and desire of a better outlook can become my reality.
I am not sure if everyone thoroughly read through, but some of the topics touched upon in the powerpoint presentations were of great value. I know i need to change certain habits, along with implementing a solid schedule to better manage my time in association with school course work!

Rooderick Stevenson said that the #1 reason is because a studen is lazy. i feel that if a person is lazy, then they should not have even enrolled in the class, because they are taking up space the someone who is motivated to learn could have used.
Andrew Medeiros 5:48 pm on October 11, 2010 Permalink |
I agree with you Ke’Andre. Their is a lot of people in my classes that I take on campus who are lazy and slow the class down. If your not up to the task then change your ways, or try something else.

i feel that people are afraid to ask for help so there trying to find out the answer them selfs some times they get it right and sometimes they dont but does help the fact when they need help the most they never ask the teacher for help maybe cause of embarrassment i dont know but again i feel that the main reason why they fail cause of fear itself to ask

I’m young, I’m 17 years old and I am more than motivated to do well in college. I think that motivation comes from parents also, whether it be because they are paying or you just want to make them proud. Others do not have that kind of motivation.
Mary Hendricks 12:38 am on November 6, 2010 Permalink |
I agree with you. I have always wanted to make my parents proud and i think that being in college makes her proud because i am doing something with my life, I am motivated by a few different things besides my family though, for example, where i see myself in 10 years, i would have to go to & stick through college. On another note, your 17 in college? Thats awesome!
